Political Pulse It's that time of year when some of the county's constitutional officers start turning over surpluses to the county's general fund. As in past years, Clerk of the Court Maryanne Morse and Tax Collector Ray Valdes returned money to the county. As in past years, they made sure everyone was aware. Morse's $893,959.74 check to the county comes from fees collected by the clerk's office that were not used for operations and salaries. "I say it every year," Morse said. "The men and women of my staff, working in impossible conditions, under the weight or an ever-increasing pile of paper, make this presentation possible." Since 1989, the clerk has turned over more that $75.6 million to the county. Valdes announced he was returning a record amount of unused revenues for the 11th consecutive year. Valdes' office collects property taxes levied by the county, the school board and the St. Johns River Water Management District. This year, Valdes returned $3,211,873 to the county, $115,196 to the school district and $68,813 to St. Johns.
In the past 10 years, Valdes returned $27.9 million to the taxing agencies.
